The Janiel Case: The Boy Who Reported a UFO Encounter in Ceará, Brazil

In November 2008, an incident in the rural area of Itarema, on the western coast of Ceará, became one of the most well-known cases in Brazilian ufology involving a child. At the age of six, Janiel Nascimento claimed that he had been approached by beings associated with an unidentified flying object while playing with family members on a rural property in the region.

According to accounts collected by researchers investigating the case, the boy was accompanied by his brother, Gilmário, aged 10, and his cousin, Zé Felipe, aged 8, on the afternoon of November 2, 2008. The three children were playing in an open field when they noticed the approach of a luminous object described as a “ball of fire.”

According to the testimonies, Janiel was the first to notice the phenomenon. Initially, the other two boys paid little attention to what they were seeing. As the object drew closer, the children reported experiencing strong winds in the area.

The accounts indicate that Janiel fell to the ground while the other two boys took shelter in a nearby cashew tree. From their position in the tree, they claimed to have seen the object approach the boy, who was unsuccessfully trying to get back on his feet.

Frightened, Gilmário and Zé Felipe ran to their grandmother’s house to seek help. A few minutes later, Janiel returned home by himself.

Upon his arrival, his grandmother, Maria Nascimento, noticed a cut below the boy’s right armpit. According to her account, the wound was approximately seven centimeters (about 2.8 inches) long.

Family members stated that there was no apparent bleeding and no visible signs of inflammation around the injury.

Janiel was taken to a healthcare facility for medical evaluation and treatment. In addition to the cut, he had scratches on his right arm, shoulder, and back. According to family members, the injuries healed without complications.

When questioned about the incident, the boy initially said that he had been injured by an animal. Later, however, he began describing an experience involving a flying object and two beings that allegedly emerged from the structure.

In interviews recorded by researchers, Janiel described the object as a structure made of materials resembling glass and metal. According to his account, there was a light on the upper part of the object and it emitted a sound similar to falling rain.

The boy also described two entities with an unusual appearance. According to his testimony, one of the beings remained near the entrance of the object while the other approached him. Janiel claimed that one of the individuals used an instrument resembling a pocketknife to make the incision on his body.

The description provided by the child included a large head and ears, glowing eyes, a small mouth, an elongated nose, and long fingernails.

His account became one of the central elements of the investigations conducted by ufologists who visited the region following the incident.

The day after the incident, family members returned to the location where the event had allegedly taken place. According to their accounts, marks were observed on the ground. The children also stated that metal wires in the area displayed a reddish glow during the object’s approach.

Following the incident, family members reported changes in Janiel’s behavior. According to his grandmother, the boy became reluctant to cross certain areas of the property alone at night, expressing fear of encountering again the phenomenon he had described.

The case attracted attention among local residents and ufology researchers. Some members of the community suggested that the injuries may have resulted from an accident involving fences on the property. The family disputed this explanation, stating that the wires in the area were smooth and did not contain barbed wire.

The incident was documented by researcher Agobar Peixoto, who conducted and recorded detailed interviews with Janiel while he was still a child. The material helped bring national attention to the case among researchers and enthusiasts of the subject.

Years later, Janiel avoided discussing the matter publicly. Family members also became increasingly reluctant to speak about the incident.

In 2016, at the age of 14, Janiel died following an accident involving a muzzle-loading shotgun used for hunting. The tragedy brought an end to the life of the young boy who had become the central figure in one of the most widely known UFO-related cases involving a child in Brazilian ufology.

To this day, the incident remains without a widely accepted explanation. For ufology researchers, the combination of eyewitness testimony, physical marks, and family accounts continues to place the Janiel Case among the most frequently discussed reports of alleged close encounters in northeastern Brazil.
